Leadership Opportunities
The overriding objective of CIRTL is to enhance undergraduate STEM and SBE education, and the Alumni Network was created 1) to further this mission by continuing to support the professional development of alumni, who encounter students in many different post-secondary education settings, 2) to keep alumni connected to the main CIRTL Network to further its programs, and 3) to foster interactions among alumni.
A leadership team of alumni is now needed to move the Alumni Network forward. Roles will be elected by the alumni, and will rotate, probably on a yearly basis, and so that there is continuity. For instance, the chair would likely first serve as chair-elect, then chair, then past chair. Some other roles might not rotate as often, but could use the same structure. CIRTL Central staff will continue to provide some support to the Alumni Network. The first leadership team, in collaboration with members of the CIRTL Network, will have a number of important decisions to make about the way the Alumni Network functions.
Probable Leadership Team Roles
Chair – Calls and chairs meetings (quarterly?), reports to CIRTL Network; facilitates and coordinates work of others. Chair moves to this role from a chair-elect position, and after her or his term moves to a past chair position.
Secretary – Keeps minutes of leadership meetings; works with CIRTL Central on surveys and elections; communicates with Alumni Network the work of the leadership team.
Webmaster – Works with CIRTL Central to post and curate materials of interest on cirtlalumninetwork.net website. Builds library of previous posts to Google Group that may have lasting value
Membership chair – Works with CIRTL universities and CIRTL Central to increase enrollment in Alumni Network; keeps records of members; enrolls members in Google group; manages CIRTL Alumni Directory.
Communications chair (aka Poster-in-chief) – Insures that there are communications with members by writing a post, or soliciting a post, to the Google Group (or possibly another platform that will replace it) at least monthly.
Program chair – Works to propose and spearhead group activities (conferences and other programs, for instance: meetings about specific teaching or research topics by alumni for alumni; disciplinary or other subgroup meetings; social activities)
